Delightful Dining with Dentures

If you have been suffering from dental issues, you may not have been able to enjoy dining as much as in the past. You may be looking forward to getting dentures so you can finally indulge in a dinner out that includes some of your favorite foods and a tasty dessert. Initially, however, you may be somewhat disappointed in the experience of eating with your new set of dentures—and you may even lack the self-confidence needed to eat in front of others. Here are some handy tips that can make the transition to dentures easier.

When you first begin eating with permanent dentures, food might not taste as flavorful as it used to. The fact is, your mouth is still adjusting to the sensations of wearing dentures and those messages being sent to your brain may overtake messages relating to taste. The good news is that as you get more accustomed to denture wear, your ability to appreciate flavors will return.

New denture wearers often have difficulty sensing that foods or beverages are extremely hot. While this is nothing unusual, it is important to be careful that you do not inadvertently burn the inside of your mouth.

A diet comprised largely of soft foods such as fish, eggs, and steamed vegetables is ideal for those still getting used to new dentures. Then, once you feel a bit more comfortable eating normally, you can feel free to introduce more of your favorite items. A good tip to make this process easier is to simply cut chewier items into smaller pieces.

If tougher, crunchier items such as corn on the cob are on the menu, you may want to use a denture adhesive to help keep your dentures secure. Adhesives are also great for preventing food particles and bacteria from lodging beneath your dentures, something known for producing bad breath.

Finally, being conscientious about how you chew can make a surprisingly big difference in how your dentures feel and how quickly you adjust to them. Deliberately chewing part of your food on the left side of your mouth and part on the right helps to ensure that the pressure placed on your dentures is equalized.
