Don’t Let Gum Disease Steal Your Smile

Gum disease, also called periodontal disease, refers to an infection of your gums and the surrounding tissues that help keep your teeth in place. With good oral care, the early, mild stages of gum disease can be reversed. When it first develops, the condition is typically painless, so you may not even be aware that you have a problem. As it progresses, you may notice sore or bleeding gums and pain when chewing. If periodontal disease is left untreated, it eventually involves the connective tissue that supports your teeth. If action isn’t taken, tooth loss may result.

Gingivitis and Progression to Periodontitis

Gingivitis is usually related to poor oral hygiene habits. If you don’t clean your teeth, a sticky film called plaque builds up on them. Eventually, it hardens to form tartar that only your dentist or dental hygienist can remove. The bacteria contained in plaque and tartar irritates and inflames gums. Your dentist calls the early stage of gum infection gingivitis. It does not yet involve any loss of soft tissue or supportive bone, and it is often reversible through good oral care. If left untreated, it advances to the more serious condition known as periodontitis. Once it reaches this stage, your gums begin to pull away from your teeth and form pockets that fill with infection. Eventually, the body’s immune response and bacterial toxins start to break down and destroy the bone and connective tissue. As the loss of supporting tissues progresses, teeth loosen and fall out or require extraction.

Periodontitis Is Not Part of Normal Aging

Gum disease and tooth loss don’t have to be an inevitable part of your golden years; most periodontal problems are preventable with thorough twice-daily brushing, flossing, regular dental appointments, and professional cleanings. See your dentist in Mishawaka for early recognition and treatment of gum disease.
