Extract the Facts on Tooth Extraction

Tooth extraction is a dental procedure where a tooth is removed from its socket due to dental pain and problems. If you’re expecting to have an extraction, follow this advice to prepare and get the right toothache relief.

Reasons for Removal

There are a variety of reasons why your dentist may have to perform a tooth extraction. This usually only occurs in serious cases where the teeth are posing a risk to your dental development and overall health. The primary purposes for pulling teeth include:

  • An overcrowded mouth
  • To treat a severe infection
  • When there is the risk of infection
  • Gum disease that has caused teeth to loosen

Extraction Expectations

A tooth extraction can be performed by your general dentist, but complex cases may require an oral surgeon who is specially trained in pulling teeth. Pulling teeth is practically painless because your dentist will give you an anesthetic to numb the area. In cases with impacted teeth or when multiple teeth are being pulled, you may be administered general anesthesia, allowing you to sleep throughout the procedure. After the tooth extraction, the dentist will pack a gauze pad into the socket where the tooth was removed and ask you to bite down. This will help stop the bleeding, as well as form a protective blood clot that will allow the area to heal. Occasionally, the blood clot will break during recovery and cause a painful condition called dry socket. If this occurs, the dentist will place a special dressing over the socket in order to form a new blood clot and provide toothache relief.

Post-Procedure Practices

Recovery typically requires a few days of relaxation and follow-up care at home. These expert recommendations can help speed recovery, reduce the risk of infection, and ease any discomfort:

  • Get toothache relief by taking prescribed or over-the-counter pain relievers suggested by your dentist.
  • Apply an ice bag to the affected area immediately after the procedure to reduce swelling.
  • Continue applying ice at home for 10 minutes at a time.
  • Avoid rinsing or spitting for about six hours after the tooth extraction to avoid dislodging the clot.
  • After six hours, gently rinse your mouth with warm salt water to prevent infection.
  • Do not drink from a straw for the first 24 hours.
  • Eat soft foods the day after the tooth extraction, adding solid foods as you recover.
  • Prop up your head on pillows while resting to reduce any bleeding.
  • Brush and floss your teeth as usual, but avoid the extraction site to prevent infection.
