Should You Replace Missing Teeth with Dental Implants?

When teeth develop extensive disease, a root canal is often the only way to save them. If they can’t be saved, they must be extracted. Unfortunately, extraction leaves unsightly gaps in your smile, and this can affect your self-confidence as well as your ability to chew foods normally. Over time, your missing teeth can also cause adjacent teeth to shift. If you have adequate healthy jawbone and gum tissue, affordable dental implants are a reliable and natural-looking way to restore your smile. If you need more than one tooth replaced, implant dentures or bridges are another option.

Understanding the Dental Implant Process

Dental implants are stable and reliable, and they don’t require procedures on adjacent teeth. While some can be placed in one day, many implant restorations take place over the course of several appointments. First, a titanium screw is inserted into your jaw and covered with gum tissue. It is allowed to fuse with your jawbone for several months before the abutment, an extension that holds the crown, is placed. In some cases, the implant and abutment are a single unit and only require one surgery. After a healing period, the dentist fashions a natural-looking permanent crown and cements it into place to complete the restoration. All dentists receive some training in implant surgeries while in dental school, but depending on your needs, you may be referred to an endodontist, oral surgeon, or other specialists for evaluation and care.

Dental Implants: An Excellent Alternative

Since even the best dental implants aren’t the same as your natural teeth, it’s always preferable to save your teeth through root canals or other treatments when possible. However, when that’s not an option, a dental implant is an excellent alternative. The best candidates for dental implants have good overall health and oral hygiene and don’t smoke.

Talk with your dentist, endodontist, or periodontist about your eligibility for dental implants.
