Tooth Extractions in Mishawaka, IN

In the past, tooth extractions were a form of major surgery that resulted in long recovery times and less than stellar replacements for the lost tooth. However, over the past several decades, the dental field has made great advances in these procedures to help patients get back to their normal lives and enjoy a wealth of replacement options that can replicate the look of their lost tooth. Tooth extractions are performed for a variety of reasons, whether it’s something traditional like having wisdom teeth removed or removing a tooth that is severely damaged in an accident or has been subject to tooth decay over time.

In most of these cases, dentists will try to fix damaged teeth with crowns or other forms of dental reconstruction, but in some instances where the tooth is beyond repair, extraction is the only viable option. A tooth extraction procedure requires local anesthesia, and in some cases some patients will need to be sedated if the tooth is impacted significantly in the gums. The surrounding tissue and bone will have to be removed to expose the tooth, which can then be removed. Self-dissolving stitches are usually used, which will eventually break down and seal up the socket that has been left behind by the tooth.

In the period following the procedure, patients may experience some swelling and bleeding, and many dentists suggest rinsing out the mouth with salt water to remove any bacteria or blood that could accumulate in the socket. One of the most important factors to keep in mind after a tooth extraction procedure is to avoid “dry socket.” If the blood clot inside of the socket is allowed to be dislodged, this could expose the underlying nerves and bone, leading to severe pain and possible infection. If this occurs, patients may have to return to the dentist’s office for additional treatments to promote proper healing of the socket and reducing pain.

Along with regular mouth rinsing, dentists suggest washing out one’s mouth after each meal, avoiding any hazardous behaviors like smoking or drinking alcohol and being especially careful to avoid brushing near the extraction site for several days after the procedure. Ultimately, with a bit of care and consideration, patients can make it through the tooth extraction process unscathed and be ready to handle tooth replacements or other options down the road to restore their brilliant smiles.
